Wind Energy Test Center
Wind Energy Test Center

Interested in renewable energy? Klitmøller is about a half hour drive from Østerild Wind Energy Test Center. There you can see some of the biggest wind turbines in the world being tested under close to ideal wind conditions. The wind turbine models will actually be used offshore, and it’s tricky to get them to Østerild, but both Siemens and Vestas have joined with Denmark’s Technical University (DTU) to improve the science of wind energy.

I’ve written about Østerild on my blog, New In Sustainability, several times. My last post on the topic was about how DTU, Siemens and Vestas are really missing an opportunity to educate and win over the hearts and minds  of people interested in renewable energy. Julie’s Glass Art – an Update

I stopped by Julie’s Glass Kunst today. I was lucky to find the shop open and Julie there and happy to chat. The day before my step mother had been sweet and had bought me a gift from the shop. Her gallery is very close to House 24733.  Look for the white flag.

Faarup Sommerland

Faarup SommerlandMy family and I had a BLAST in the warm summer heat at Faarup Sommerland.  It’s about an hour and a half from Klitmøller in the direction of Aalborg.  Lots of big roller coasters, but my little kids were more into the water park, the mini cars, and the other rides for small children. The place is in a beautiful environment, the staff is experienced and friendly, and everything just seemed well designed and maintained. We definitely got our money’s worth. Bon Bon Museum

There’s a Bon Bon Muesum at Bedsted, a 30 minute drive from Klitmøller. I haven’t been there, but you can find information at http://www.bonbonmuseum.com/bonbonmuseet/kontaktdk/index.html.

North Sea Aquarium

The North Sea Aquarium in Nr. Vorupør is right by the water – it’s hard to miss. I’ve never been there, but the website – http://www.north-sea.dk/ – actually makes it look really interesting. Good price too.  I think I’ll take my kids the next time I’m in Klitmøller.

Nordsø Akvariet i Nr..

Visit Thisted

Interested in a bit of city? Thisted is a lovely place to visit and has a number of attractions, cafes, bars, restaurants, shops…and a brewery!

Occupied since the stone age, the town was named in the 600-700s as the Germanic god Tyr’s Place (Tyr-sted). Tyr was known as a one-handed god of law and was sometimes said to be a son of Odin. (Danes became Christians gradually during the viking age, but 1100 is as good a date as any to peg). The church in Thisted goes way back in history – it was a wooden building until it became a granite Roman-style church. Around 1500 a Gothic church was built on the site.  Continue reading Visit Thisted

Givskud Zoo Safari – on the way to or from Klitmøller

Givskud Zoo Safari is right smack in the middle of Jutland, northwest of Vejle. I think it’s too far for a day trip from Klitmøller, but it’s a nice treat on the way to or from your Klitmøller vacation. Lions, giraffes, elephants, zebras, etc. You can drive through the park and have exotic animals come right up to your car. My favorite was the giraffes. You can also have a nice walk and an ice cream.

The website is here: http://www.givskudzoo.dk/.  You should be able to save money by buying tickets online.  Adults pay 175 kroner each , children aged 3-11 cost 95 kroner, and little kids are free.

Hjemmesiden er her: http://www.givskudzoo.dk/.

Wave Star

Those interested in renewable energy should consider visiting the Wave Star Energy site in the harbor at Hanstholm. It is an experimental system designed to convert wave energy into electricity. The technology is tricky, in part because salt water is corrosive and off shore sites are difficult to service. The vision involves numerous floats going up and down with the waves with a windmill on top (see picture below). I wrote about my visit there (in English) on my other blog, New In Sustainability. The Wave Star site is here.  It’s worth taking a tour, or you can just see the site from the land by driving through the Hanstholm harbor area, past all the fishing boats and buildings towards the end. You can buy some fresh fish while you’re there. Continue reading Wave Star
